Personality:
Giorno Giovanna is a part of the Joestar family by technicality on paper, but in spirit he is a clear embodiment of the hallmark Joestar will and burning passion. He is a mature teen who exudes a confident and collected air about him, though he is not without his own violent streak when circumstances arise. He is a charismatic individual who takes to leadership with ease, having a shrewd evaluation of things around him, and inventive approaches to problems. One of the things most people around him comment on at some point is the way his passionate dedication to his goals can be so great it infects those around him, motivating them in turn. While undoubtedly a true inspiration however, he did not spend most of his life doing so. In fact, one could argue that he was ‘alone’.
Even as a teen Giorno was completely self-sufficient, with no discomfort in the idea of figuring out a way to have money for himself, or even being on his own. This can easily be traced to his childhood; initially being left alone by his mother instilled a sense of having to be accustomed to being alone. When he moved to Italy and found himself ostracized by the other children in his age group this only further supported the idea. This is such an ingrained aspect of living for Giorno that even once he has a group around him whom he shares mutual trust with his first reaction is to take care of things on his own, rather than accepting aid from others. He shows this during the fight with Notorious B.I.G.- when he is offered an alternative to removing his remaining hand and arm to get rid of the stand, he does not take any real time to consider this before going through with his plan, one that he only needs himself to ensure will be successful. This is something he has started learning how to work past, but it is not an immediate change. While alone this is something that can help him and keep him safe, in a group it acts as a form of self-isolation, showing his hesitancy to trust others around him.
Another consequence of his childhood isolation is Giorno’s skill and tendency to calculate things and people around him. This started out as an attempt to read his step-father’s moods, as the man turned out to be physically abusive, and as a child Giorno wanted to know the best way to avoid the man’s ire. As he grew up he learned how to apply this not only to knowing what kinds of moods people were in, or what their next actions were likely to be, but also how to use this to his advantage. He applies this kind of calculation and thinking many times while still new in the gang- in one instance he is faced with a choice to either drink a cup of urine that was given to him in a form of hazing, or reject it, and after calculating what is more likely to leave him in a positive light with the group he makes it seem as if he has drank the cup. At another point he realized nothing he did was going to make a positive change in a new teammate’s opinion of him, and in fact his presence was limiting how much the other would do.He therefore allowed himself to be captured by the enemy, to allow the other to act without worry of him witnessing it. The problem that arises with his calculations is that he often falls into the trap of thinking that he has everything under control and he can end up shaken if he ends up wrong.
He is so often correct in his calculations that he is normally very confident and self-certain that he is right, and knows exactly how things will pan out. With the inherent success of past calculations and established ability to read people, Giorno does not allow himself the idea of failure or doubt. This causes a huge issue for him when he is faced with undeniable flaws in his calculations or reading. If he finds himself faced with a situation where things are outside of his ability to be certain of, he will lose faith in himself, and be very visibly shaken. One particular instance of this is when he and Mista are facing off against Ghiaccio and he makes an error in judgement, driving their car into water, rather than staying on the road. He had felt certain, at the time, this would create issues for their opponent, but because he did not fully understand the other’s abilities he ended up making things more difficult for them. His reaction to this was one of considerable despair, encouraging Mista to leave him, and complete their mission, as it was more important than his own survival. Fortunately Mista is not willing to accept such, and helps to restore Giorno’s confidence.
It is with this air of calculated confidence that he typically faces most situations, even if he does not actually feel such. He shows almost no outward reaction toward a majority of unexpected occurrences, regardless of how outlandish or commonplace they are. This allows him to be harder for others to read, though in some cases this causes the same issue as his self-sufficiency in making him seem arrogant or over confident. It also means that when he does lose his composure it is a very obvious change from his normal behavior, highlighting the situation that is happening in a way that can make it even more tense than prior.
Whether he displays it or not, when he is caught by surprise or backed into a corner Giorno has a tendency to display a level of creativity that is on par with many of the JoJos before him. Like many of the others in this particular group of people, he will take leaps of logic during such times, and from there will often take extreme measures to solve his situation. He does this in many ways, from turning a lot full of cars into frogs, to changing a brick into a snake in order to have a source of inoculation on hand, but the best example of this is during his fight with Cioccolata. During this fight, he not only turns a bullet into a tree in order to keep himself from a deadly fall, but when that is destroyed, he turns it back into a bullet, which he manages to calculate the correct trajectory to pierce into his opponent, at the same time- unknown to the other- he changed it once more, so that it became the egg of a Rhinoceros beetle, to shortly after emerge from the other. His creativity is most actively shown when he is under duress and has less time to calculate and plan, but he combats that by having a wide array of knowledge to pull from in order to change things ad hoc and manage to succeed in his efforts.
Giorno is someone who has a very distinct set of morals and ideas of justice, and in his efforts to uphold both of these he can be cutthroat. When he finds someone has gone against what he sees as common morals he will mercilessly deliver punishment. In some cases this is as simple as conniving a situation in which someone will inadvertently kill themselves, other times it is as dramatic and visceral as a rapid-fire barrage of punches until his opponent cannot survive. These people have proved themselves unacceptable to Giorno's morals, which seem to have two firm lines. He is loathe to allow someone to survive if they are the kind of person to disregard the lives of those who are uninvolved and treat them as no more important than litter. Nor can he stand those who would willingly and intentionally sell drugs to children, or vulnerable in a society. These are the kinds of people the Giorno deals with in a ruthless manner.
In great contrast to this mercilessness and the dark of his childhood Giorno is a compassionate person who has great care for the people in his community and the people around him as a whole. This goes beyond his moral standing on the inclusion of uninvolved people, or preying upon the vulnerable. He shows this in his willingness to soothe some bystanders, that they will not be included in a fight he is currently involved in. This is also shown in the way that, as soon as he finds himself capable of doing so, he is quick to heal his companions, and would rather end up injured himself than risk them getting hurt, if he can do anything about it. He is no less emotionally compassionate than he is physically, willing to step forward and voice confidence in Narancia who had been being told he had failed to keep their safe house secret, complementing his decisiveness in facing off against the enemy. He recognizes the distress his companion is in and chooses to reassure him rather than allowing him to be talked down to without contest. This goes beyond an idea of calculation and evaluation of positive or negative impact, but rather a genuine concern.
Another factor of Giorno that his companions and friends are well acquainted with is his particular brand of soft courtesy. Those who he has found enough mutual trust to allow close to him are treated to a normally soft spoken, and respectful person who is generous with his slight smiles and gentle expressions. There is a distinctness to this that has a feeling of intimacy, indicating just how close he feels to them. Simultaneously strangers and those enemies who have not offended his morals themselves are treated with a courtesy meant to distance them, holding them away at arms length. His tone is much more neutral with such people, though with his manufactured smile it comes across as genuine and polite, easily making such people think he is more fond of them than he actually is.
Deception is not only a tool to Giorno, but a way of life as well. He has no qualms about using it to steal from people if he deems it reasonable, and it seems he makes a pattern of picking tourists to pilfer from, rather than locals. Beyond this he keeps up a level of deception with nearly everyone around him, though the level at which he does so is heavily impacted by his emotional proximity. People he feels close to he only keeps a few things from, though these may be even as large as his true aim within Passione. By contrast people he is not close to are treated to a well crafted deception, such as his schoolmates who are led to think he is friendly with them, while he does not show true investment in them. In this way he uses his deception as a guard against others, to protect himself.
Above all that he is or has, Giorno has resolve. There is no question or doubt to this statement. Everything he does and everything about him is influenced by this. From his willingness to go beyond normal limits for the sake of his dream or his companions to the force of will that spurs him to act on impulse, and creatively surpass the challenges in front of him. His resolution is what provides the driving force behind his character, giving teeth to his self declared dream. It is also why he can become so focused on the situation right in front of him that he fails to notice other factors until they interrupt him directly. This happens to him when he is so focused on keeping the flame of a lighter lit, only to walk right into the path of someone tossing out a bucket of water. He has the same type of focus when facing off with Cioccolata, missing that the other had a phone, much less was making calls during battle, including while he hid from Giorno. Such resolve can both be a powerful motivator, and a restricting blinder for him.
Giorno is many things, and while he has some very teenage moments, he is very much a person who has had to mature far beyond his age, but has taken to it fully. He faces everything in life with resolve and an unyielding dream, but he is far from infallible and suffers from his own brand of overconfidence. Fortunately he has started to learn how to accept support from the people around him that he trusts, and is beginning to learn how to not think of doing everything on his own.
